Sermon: Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:5-11)

As Paul calls us in his letter to the Philippians to grow in humility (Phil. 2:1–4), he points us to the ultimate example of humility in Jesus Christ. In one of the most famous passages in all the Bible, this Christ hymn shows us the extraordinary humility of our Master, who, being in the form of God, willingly gave up his rights and privileges to take the form of a servant.
But in this passage, Paul also teaches us where humility fits in the economy of God as the path toward exaltation, contrary to the way the world’s economy works.
And finally, this Christ hymn leads us to worship Jesus, bending the knee and confessing with our tongues that Jesus Christ is Lord.
