Sermon: Choose This Day Whom You Will Serve (Joshua 24)

Although we don’t often think about covenants in the way that ancient near eastern nation-states did, covenantal ideas still permeate our lives in significant ways, such as in marriage. There, we are not dealing with mere contracts of the minimum requirements, but with covenantal pledges to give yourself wholly to your spouse all the days of your life.
As Joshua comes to the very end of his life, he establishes one final covenant renewal between Yahweh and the people of Israel. While it is interesting to see how his pattern in Joshua 24 follows the patterns of ancient near eastern covenant-making protocols, it is far more interesting to see the way in which covenant stands at the heart of Israel’s relationship with Yahweh—and how our relationship in Christ does up to this very day.
Hear in this sermon the gospel of Christ’s covenant according to Joshua 24.
